“ABRAÇAR AMÁLIA É ABRAÇAR PORTUGAL”

The Setúbal City Council joins the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Amália Rodrigues, bringing us the conference “Abraçar Amália é Abraçar Portugal”. Moderated by Tiago Correia (fadista) and attended by Tiago Torres da Silva (writer), Vicente Rodrigues (President of the Amália Rodrigues Foundation), Joana Machado (researcher at the Amália Rodrigues Foundation) and Pedro Pinheiro Vaz (responsible for the walking tour “Viver Amália”), the conversation brings testimonies about the various sides of Amália Rodrigues at an artistic and personal level.

AMÁLIA CANTA-ME O FADO

On September 20, the exhibition “Amália Canta-me o Fado” opens to the public, free of charge, bringing together objects from the private collection of Ricardo Melo Nunes, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal. The exhibition can be seen in the city’s concert hall until October 20th and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 1 pm to 8 pm.

After a morning of celebrations dedicated to the Oureana Foundation / Instituto Amália Rodrigues and the Medieval Restaurant, a Cenotaph to Amália Rodrigues is blessed, next to the Castle of Ourém.

Mariana de Figueiredo shows us her street, from the top of the hill. With the Lisbon houses as background, the fado singer travels through some of the most emblematic fados that Amália left us, always in dialogue with the city. Recorded for RTP at Teatro Taborda, this voice and guitar recital has the artistic direction of Daniel Gorjão.

Amalia and the Media – an essay

In this exhibition, visitors will be able to witness the evolution of the means of recording the voice of Amália Rodrigues and learn about the technology that served and made it possible to spread throughout the world the interpreter known as “The Voice of Portugal”.

This exhibition is developed in several “acts” and begins with a composition of newspaper clippings, in order to show the public the dimension of Amália in both national and foreign press; equipment used in studio recordings by Amália, audiovisual equipment, photographs, record editions (including some unpublished); posters of Amália’s shows, among others.

“The Poetry of Amália”

As part of Amália Rodrigues’ centenary, the National Library of Portugal presents originals and editions of the poets that Amália sang, from medieval authors to her contemporaries.

Mostly by the hand of Alain Oulman whose influence, in the words of the exhibition’s commissioner, Frederico Santiago, would produce “the most original and fruitful relationship known between classical poetry and popular music”, Amália “puts an entire people not only knowing the sonnets of Camões as also being moved by them. (…) An acute literary sensitivity that culminates in some of her most beautiful poems, many of them also sung, especially in the final stage of her career ”.

PROGRAMMING OF AUTUMN FESTIVALS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AVEIRO:

 

Tribute to Amália Rodrigues – with Miguel Xavier

Accompanied by Miguel Amaral (Portuguese guitar), André Teixeira (fado guitar) and Filipe Teixeira (bass, double bass).

In addition to the classics like “Fado Português” or “Maria Lisboa”, this Tribute will bring Amália’s lesser-known repertoire, giving rise to themes such as “Na Esquina de Ver o Mar”, “Rosa Tirana” or “Cuidei que tinha Morrido”. Born in Guimarães, praised by Ricardo Pais and Camané, the young fado singer Miguel Xavier is one of the talented voices of the new generation of fado singers and the winner of the Lordelo do Ouro Fado Contest having participated in the Caixa Ribeira and Caixa Alfama festivals, and being also a cast member of ” AMÁLIA – Não sei porque te foste embora” at Coliseu do Porto.
