Centennial Celebrations

World-renowned artist, Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999) is, unquestionably, one of the most important artists in the history of 20th century music. Her international career was one of the longest and most global in the whole of the 20th century.

Now in the 21st century, Amália’s legacy is still alive, modern and timeless.

The year 2020 will see the commemorations of her birth with a vast programme developed by a network of partnerships involving a wide range of archival and museological institutions, audio-visual organisations and local authorities, among many others, always with strategic cooperation the purpose of which is to safeguard and maintain the universal memory of Amália Rodrigues.

The official opening of the Commemorations of the Centenary of the Birth of Amália Rodrigues will take place in Lisbon on 1 July 2020, and the closing ceremony will take place in the city of Oporto in July 2021.

With the hub in Lisbon extending to all national territory, the legacy of Amália will also be celebrated at the same time abroad, and thus the programme will be open to society at large in a collective celebration of an artistic legacy which continues to assert the name of Portugal in the world.

The Official Commemorations of the Centenary of the Birth of Amália Rodrigues will be based on a programme drawn up by organisations linked to culture and the media, under the management, superintendence and protection of the Ministry of Culture, as well as the Lisbon City Council and other relevant authorities in the area of fado, music and culture in general, and will be broken up into 9 structural parts.
